THE ISLAND
The island has electromagnetic properties. No duh. well, Alvar Hanso, chief supporter and founder of the DHARMA Initiative, sought to find such an island. somewhere where he could conduct experiments and such in an out-of-the-way place, so as not to disturb the outside world. Thus the 6 hatches pertaining to electromagnetic research, zoology, meteorology, physiology, etc. The island was originally inhabited by Buddhists, but they were displaced by the DHARMA initiative, and removed from the island.
THE EXPERIMENTS
It’s been a long time since 1980, when dharma first took over the island. During some of the experiments, several agents from the Widmore Company, a rival of Hanso, found their way into the DHARMA Initiative and the Island. They tried to disrupt the experiments, but went too far, and upset the delicate electromagnetic balance (think over-surge at the Swan Hatch). The only difference from Live Together Die Alone’s overload? It was much more powerful, and not at the same hatch. This other hatch was also an electromagnetic station, but in what is now known as “The Dark Territory”. This explosion created a sort of “sickness” to everyone on the island, and the territory is still under some strange after effect of the explosion. Creatures are distorted if they linger too long in the dark territory. (I’m thinking like some incident of nuclear category, only it has to do with electromagnetism. I’m not that smart in this area, but I do know that our bodies have iron in them.) The area still has an uncontrollable electromagnetic property, and is very dangerous.
DHARMA tried to repopulate the island, but they were now challenged by the sick Widmores, now known as “the others”. Led by top agent “Fenry” and Tom, these sick people now seek one thing: removal of the electromagnetic disease. They are trying to take over the hatches, because of the following reason: DHARMA has come up with a cure: the injections.
THE MONSTER
To protect DHARMA, the initiative starts to stock it’s self with weapons, and a new type of warfare: the smoke monster, or Cerberus as Desmond and Kelvin put it. This electromagnetical monster was once able to be remotely controlled. However, and unexpected trip into the Dark Territory rendered the Monster out of control, and a potential hazard to everything. Now, it randomly collects data and patrols the island on it’s own random mind. (how this relates to it knowing who is good and who is bad, idk. Somewhat of a plot hole here…..)
THE OTHERS
As I mentioned before, the others want to become unsick. They have no way of communicating out to the other world, nor do they know about the dynamite at the black rock. They cannot cross to the losties side in large numbers because of fear of the smoke monster, who patrols around the Dark Territory. DHARMA’s hope hinges on the Swan hatch. It was their last running experiment: the other’s shut down the rest. Fenry is hoping that Jack, the doctor, Sawyer, the guy who hoards things, and Kate, the person who knows stuff about “potions” (made Jack sick, Michael sick) will have knowledge about the injections, which they are running low on. The side effects of the disease are disabled mental health (think the French chick) and blank mind (Claire, Charlie), Hallucinations (Jack’s dad, the boar, the horse, all from people who traveled into the dark territory). The injections keep these symptoms away. Fortunately for the losties, they are located in an area with low electromagnetic power.
PENNY WIDMORE
Penny realizes the innocence of Alvar Hanso and the DHARMA initiative, and believes her father (Owner of Widmore) is in the wrong. she is seeking to rescue her father’s agents and the dharma people from the island, but cannot find the island, due to the electromagnetism that disrupts satellite images, etc. the only way to find the island is if there is a large electromagnetic pulse or burst, that can be traced. This is what the Russian dudes where so excited about. Miss Widmore will try and plan some kind of rescue, and it will be interesting to see if Michael finds her and helps her or not.
