Hi i've got a part theory i'd like to put out there. It's really on speculating on where the Locke story is heading and possible twists within that. I've not really got a "meta-theory" as i'm not entirely convinced the writers have one themselves, they seem to be laying down a series of clues to puzzles and riddles they've yet to create an answer for. One of the things that makes me think this is the use of the androgynous "Alex" as the name for Rousseau's child as they'd yet to decide its sex. Anyway on with the theory:
It's concerning Helen (Locke's girlfriend) and whether she was actually in love with him. I think that her "let it go" attitude conflicts with someone who is attending group therapy sessions and that maybe she was a plant there to befriend Locke. Why? We know that Locke's father had become really annoyed at the Harassment from his son and being a shady character with a lifetime as a con artist would have known some nasty and duplicitous people. He also seemed to be well off (gated mansion with 24/7 security) so could easily have hired someone to do a "long con" on his son to get him to give up the stalking. Look at the evidence or her main influences on Locke's life (that we see): stops him pestering father, reads him the obituary to make him aware of his father's "death" and dumps him as soon as his father leaves his life. Yes the Locke flashbacks do center around his relationship with his father so it's inevitable that any woman is also seen as part of that story but it's too neat. The way she leaves him as his father skips town as if her jobs done and the way his father mentions her with a sort of mocking smile.
Maybe even the mob guys are part of the con to extricate him from his son. 700 thou doesn't seem much for a guy who lives like he does.
Anyway. I've another theory (probably everyone has come to this conclusion already) that Locke's Dad is "Sawyer" or the Sawyer that caused castaway Sawyer's Dad to shoot his wife and kill himself. It's inevitable with him being a conman and the bisecting stories that the show is doing that he won't have had some contact with Sawyer (them both being conmen).
