I believe that Locke may have caught onto who the smoke monster was at an early age (remember Richard Albert visited him when he was a boy & young Locke had drawn a crayon picture of Smokey) and Locke is now tricking the MIB. Its says that its possible that Locke is now consciously trapping the smoke monster inside him right now - remember how MIB, in Locke's body, said to the young boy on the island, "Don't tell me what I can't do!". Locke is still there & is perhaps fooling MIB into thinking that he has complete control over his body. Remember in the flash sideways Locke says to Jack something to the effect of, "they haven't lost you father; they've only lost his body. Your father is still out there somewhere & that is whats important".
This would also fit well into what some have noticed as the names of some of the characters actually being descriptive of their roles (such as Jack Shepard and his number being 23, Psalm 23 - "The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. ....").
