In the Original Time Line small details about our characters' lives can change. Crucial moments in their lives, however, will happen no matter what: Charlie dies; Desmond runs away from his relationship with Penny; Faraday is killed by his mother; etc. These crucial moments will happen. How, where, and when they happen can change.
It has been observed that in the Alternate Time Line, small details about the characters are different, yet the major events in their lives are the same as their Original Time Line versions: Rose is diagnosed with cancer; Kate is wanted for murder; Christian dies in Australia; Jack becomes a gifted doctor; Locke is paralyzed.
Locke dying by the hand(s) of Ben Linus is a major event in the lives of both Locke and Ben in the Original Time Line.
