This is an early cut of a theory - one that is going to take some more time to fully research. I just started re-watching LOST yet again, considering the season five information now. And then I saw the scene where John Locke came face to face with Smokie for the first time.
When he was asked about it, he said that he didn't see anything. But suddenly it struck me - what if it was all the way back in season one that Locke became Un-Locke? What if Smokie killed the real Locke and replaced him back then? Although that would mean Smokie left the island, but there's nothing that says it couldn't.
And then some of his dialogue with Boone. Such as being 'motivated' to reach for the knife to un-tie himself, and then using Shannon as bait. And it was seconds after hearing Shannon that Smokie appeared. Seemed rather coincidental. And it was during this time that Locke could predict weather very closely "give or take a little".
What if Smokie (whether he is MIB or not) dealt with Locke way back then. Heck, it may not even have been Locke that awoke wiggling his toes after the crash. But I'd lean more towards Smokie dealing with Locke in that first encounter.
And Locke moved around almost a little too quickly - he even snuck up on Sayid, making a comment that he moves even more quietly than he thought.
Thinking to the concept of loophole, maybe Locke was planted as MIB's loophole from the start.
I know there are still the scenes where Locke and Smokie are both involved, but we know that Smokie can take more than one form at the same time (Nikki and Paolo's spiders).
I realize that there are plenty of holes in the theory, but thought I'd throw it out there. It would be something that would allow the LOST team to say 'you see we planned it from the beginning'.
The other thing I noticed was how ominous Vincent seemed in some episodes. But that's for another thread.
