I'm gonna just put this out there for discussion's sake.
What if Richard Alpert is none other than the MIB himself?
Lets look at the facts first:
1) MIB was obviously at the very least a colleague of Jacob's.
2) MIB was present while the "Blackrock" was entering the island’s boundaries or outer circle.
3) We have not seen the MIB in person to our full knowledge throughout this whole series.
4) Richard's first appearance to Ben was in The Man Behind the Curtain and he was looking very piratey.
5) Richard was definitely intrigued by John Locke, throughout his life.
6) Richard has been less than honest in the past to various "Hostile" Leaders.
7) Richard was not harmed going through the sonic fence.
Now for some stuff we don't know the answers to yet
1) Is the smoke monster definitely also the Man in Black?
2) Was Richard one of the passengers or crew of “The Blackrock”?
3) How did Jacob “Make him this way.” And is that necessarily true?
4) Why was Richard wearing pirate like clothes in 1973, the day he met Ben?
5) Why do the time flashes not affect Richard and “The others”?
6) How does Richard and for that matter Jacob get back and forth to and from the island
7) How did Richard get Anthony Cooper to the Island so fast?
Now hopefully I can speculate on the answers to this question.
As my first question asked, what if Richard is the MIB himself? This makes sense to me because, if my memory serves me right, then we have never seen Richard and Christian in the same place and time. We also don’t know the MIB’s name for a certain reason. What if as soon as the blackrock crashed onto the island or into the Jungle is more like it, MIB found the body of one of the Blackrock’s crew and took his form forever. Maybe the Smoke monster is not MIB but is controlled by him therefore also controlled by Richard by proxy. Maybe Smokey can only take over dead bodies for a short time, but Richard can do so for as long as he wants to. This would make Locke = Smokey in 2007,
As many of us already think anyway, but not MIB, as they, in this theory (and in my opinion), are separate, and Richard is MIB. Maybe Richard knows that Locke is Smokey but is only pretending not to know what is going on, for Bens benefit. Maybe MIB Never communicated to Jacob ever again after that scene in the Incident, which means Richard has never communicated to Jacob, nor has any of the other so called leaders of the “Others”, that is why Richard was the only one to know where to find Jacob, and also says the phrase “Tell Jacob, Richard says Hi”
Now you may ask why does Jacob react to Flocke as if he is talking directly to MIB? Well like I said earlier Smokey is the sole property or agent of MIB/Richard, and will relay the info to him, it is possible that MIB/Richard never had a single conversation with Jacob again after the one we saw at the beginning of The Incident.
What does this all mean for the show?
Well, If Richard is indeed the MIB that we saw in The Incident, then we can assume that all the Others are not following Jacob’s orders as they thought, but are following Richard’s orders all along, and everything done in the name of Jacob was really not even Jacob’s idea at all.
This would also answer some of the other questions such as; how did Richard get Anthony Cooper to the island so quickly? He went and told Smokey to take his form.
Why was Richard dressed as a pirate in, The Man Behind The Curtain,?
Because it was Smokey acting as Richard and the only form Smokey can use is the original dead body form.
Why do the time flashes not affect Richard and the “Others”? Well because Richard is MIB, and is timeless, and has made the others that way too.
Illana asked for Ricardus by name. Is it possible that Jacob has told the “Statue Gang” that Richard is the impostor, and they just wanted to get a visual on him so as to know who to look out for? But then why would Richard know the answer to the question?
I don’t know, this just came to me as I read another theory on here, so it isn’t based on concrete evidence, so just let me hear some of your comments, and if you can think of any other parallels or possibilities of Richard being the MIB.
If this is true then LOST really will have a huge twist next year.
