Let's talk about Joseph Campbell. He is the author and philosopher who wrote about heroes and myths and how every myth is really telling the same story and follows certain archetypal patterns that have been persistent throughout history and time through different cultures and religions. He is also the major inspiration behind George Lucas' Star Wars, which is of course, a main influence to Abrams and Lindelof who have given us Lost.
While researching a Sumerian goddess named Innana (much like our new Ilana) I found a reference to Campbell at the end of a wikipedia page. You should check this out by the way. There are some interesting correlations between the ancient goddess and our new character. Anyway, at the end of the page it said how the moral of the story of this goddess was to show that we as humans should learn to accept that there are positive and negative qualities that we all possess and that we need to embrace them all - even the bad ones. "realizing one's own strength through an episode of seeming powerlessness, and/or an acceptance of one's own negative qualities, as it is by Joseph Campbell." This quote is from Wikipedia.
Now this really got me going because I always found Campbell interesting and knew he was behind Lucas' thoughts while creating Star Wars. That said - I had to come up with a theory of course.
OK - so if Campbell is also an influence to the Lost creators where can we see that and what does this mean for the end of our show? First off, there will definitely be a happy ending. Don't worry even if characters you love dies, they will really still be alive. Just like Obi Wan and Yoda and Anakin at the end of Return of the Jedi.
My guess is that this is really what it's all about. This story just like Star Wars and all other myths are about family. More closely about fathers and sons. For us, this story will be about Jack and Christian and Jack coming to grips with the fact that he cannot fix everything. He has to understand that somethings are out of his control. This is much like Anakin. Anakin thought he knew the future - his wife dying in his dreams. He of course wanted to do everything in his power to stop this from happening. Jack still wants to stop all of this island stuff to have never happened.
Jack will even kill himself in 1977 and everyone else because he believes it will stop him and the Losties from ever coming to the island. This is insane and never going to be the case. Even if there is a reset (which I hope there isn't) they are still going to get to that island one way or another.
Back to Campbell for another quick second. He basically believed in the duality of human beings, which is right in our faces on Lost. I believe we will see more of his philosophies and ideas come to fruition on the best show ever created. I hope others will research the possible correlations between Campbell and Lost and respond to this or create another thread and theory of their own. Have fun - can't wait till January.
