OK, so despite anything we think we know, I feel that the Losties will still end up on the island after the detonation of the nuke at the end of season 5. Why? Because, despite some stumbles over the past 5 years, the Lost writing team are good writers.
Being good writers, I would hope they'd never betray the very reason they ended up on the island to begin with.
YES, Desmond failed to push the button. YES, this is probably what brought 815 down.
But how quickly we forget that, despite Desmond's actions, 815 would NOT have landed at LAX. Even if the Swan hatch never existed, it wouldn't have happened. Yes, it might have landed safely, but it wouldn't be at LAX.
Because the plane lost communications 6 hours in, and was 1,000 miles off course before the crash even happened. So, unless the writers can explain how destroying the hatch would affect the radio communications of a plane 1,000 miles from the island, presumably without interrupting communications with any other planes in a 1,000 mile radius, 815 AT THE VERY LEAST must land safely in Fiji, not LAX.
My guess is that the plane still crashes on the island, only for a different reason. The universe, after all, has a way of course -correcting. I believe in 6x01 we will see 815 crash, but as it happens, we'll see the reactions of everyone's loved ones (whom we have come to know and love over the years ourselves) while waiting at Los Angeles International. Then, we'll start to see season 1 again - Jack, Kate, Sawyer, the Professor. . . wait, wrong show . . . all of them will be right back where they started in the pilot episode, only everyone from 1977 will be completely aware of everything that happened to them leading up.
This would also help ease the "cop out" of making all of Seasons 1-5 irrelevant and obsolete.
