It's believed Richard Alpert was a member of the Black Rock back in the 1850's. When we reach the cabin in present day we see their is a circle of ash surrounding it, possibly forcing something to stay within it.
Richard Alpert's story is this, a sailor who happens to save Jacob from another attack by the Man in Black. The Man in Black has been trying to kill Jacob for a long time, and during this time he tries to manipulate the Black Rock folk into a plan to kill Jacob. Richard will be the one who stops him and saves Jacob. Possibly creating an area where the MIB could not get out, the circle of ash.
Jacob's gift to this man is ever lasting life, and to be his right hand man for the leader of the others.
