Apologies if this turns out to be a duplicate theory...
My theory is that the numbers exist only so that Hurley could have been brought to the island. As far as I can remember the numbes only influenced Hurley's destiny in a major way. If he did not hear them while being in mental institution he would have never won the lottery and would have never end up on the island. That is also why Jacob does not visit Hurley in his childhood days. Hurley just needs to get someone tp put these numbers deeply in is head so that he can use them for lottery ticket. So whole Valenzetti equation is about conveying lottery numbers (that someone who was in the future knew) to Hurley so that he can save the god side.
Consequently, Hurley has a major role for the island and Jacob.
