Note: I have not been keeping up with the latest theories so if I say something thats been discussed already tell me in a nice way. Thanks
I recently just completely re-watched Season 5. After finishing the finale I had at least two or three really solid reasons on why there will not be a reset. So I thought I would share them =)
One of the pieces of evidence for 2007 being an alternate timeline is the fact that the barracks are destroyed. While some argue this was from the Mercenaries, others argue that this is the result of an alternate timeline that has been created after the Losties got sent into 1977. The first straight up problem with this theory is that there doesn't seem to be enough evidence TOWARDS and alternate timeline to justify a big reveal in Season 6. With more evidence people will say, "Oh that makes sense!" But with the two or three little hints weve gotten so far people will probably say, "well...I guess that kind of works" An alternate timeline will be too random.
My biggest piece of evidence though takes place in 1977. For half the season we were left wondering if the Losties were "supposed" to be there. My answer is yes. Everything and I mean EVERYTHING revolved around them being there. For example, Sayid shot Ben and he was taken to the temple to be healed. Then in the next episode Ben recalls this memory of being taken to the temple! But then you could argue that the Universe course corrected what should have already happened.
But the biggest problem with the alternate timeline theory lies within the incident itself. In the finale we witness the epic moment of Jack dropping the Jughead bomb into the pocket of energy and the energy starts sucking in everything metal. We learn later though that the Jughead had nothing to do with the creation of the magnet and instead was sitting at the bottom waiting for Juliet to bash it with a rock. Now if you remember that magnet got so strong it pulled a car over and it even yanked down that big metal tower. The problem with the timeline theory...What would the Incident be if they weren't there??!! How would they have ever been able to cement everything in? The Jughead detonation obviously plays a part in keeping that energy at bay long enough to cement everything in. While at the same time "killing" all the Losties. Which explains why Richard said he had watched them all die. They were probably teleported or something. I'm not exactly sure. But this brings me t! o my next point.
The detonation of the Jughead was a critical moment in the history of the island. Every place they flashed to was important and they stopped flashing right where they were supposed to. In LaFleur we saw Juliet finally deliver a baby on the island. Which implies that the problem hasn't happened yet. Now what "incident" could have occured between 1977 and 2001 that could cause this? Obviously the detonation of a friggin hydrogen bomb! The detonation could have destroyed the statue resulting in the pregnancy problems or the radioactivety itself could have caused the problems. Either way it is as plain as day to me that the pregnancy problems are a result of the Incident. Also, what would the incident be if not what we saw? What would it be without the Losties?
Another thing, I'm pretty sure most nuclear weapons have a shelf life of 20 to 25 years tops.
