Alright, just a quick thought.
Many people are calling the Man in Black "Esau" because he seems to harbor some kind of animosity toward Jacob. But what if we're using the wrong Biblical reference to make sense of Jacob and the mystery man?
Maybe the Biblical allusion has more to do with Jacob wrestling the mysterious stranger by the river Jabbok. The mysterious stranger (who was somehow human/angel/God) broke Jacob's hip and then renamed Jacob "Israel" (God-wrestler) Because he "wrestled with God and man and won."
Jacob asks this mysterious stranger his name and the mysterious stranger simply replies, "Why do you need to know my name?" Reminds me of Black Smoke..."We don't have a word for it..."
Anyway, the story is found in Genesis 32:22-32. The whole "wrestling with God" motif makes more sense to me than Esau...because Jacob seems to be wrestling against determinism AND wrestling with "man" by trying to set things up so they will somehow break out of the endless cycle of corruption and violence. Of course, I'm taking for granted that the man in black is also Black Smoke...
