Hi there,
recently there was a lot of theories here about aliens and spaceships and stuff that kind of bothered me, so i went to the library and studied some theoretical physics ;) i didnt find the answers in a physics book but in one that sounded rather esoteric:
"They came from the future - The secret of the ancient prophets" by Roland Roth (german)
The title made me think of Jacob and the MIB. The book's main thesis is that prophets like jesus were timetraveleres. The cool thing is that the author explains it all with theoretical science. The explanation for the time traveling made me scream WTF! because it was really THE explanation for the things going on on the island of LOST. let me sum up the main points of his scientific explanation before i use it for LOST. so here it goes:
steven hawking stated that the theory of gerneral relativity actually allows time travelling both back and forth through time. what you need is a wormhole that connects two places in the universe through bent space.they can occur in a place of constant spacetime bending when time in all reference systems is equally bent.
the problem with wormholes is that though they are mathematically possible they would collapse after very short time so that nothing could pass through. theoretical scientists like Kip S. Thorne were looking for a way to stabilize the (theoretically) opened wormholes. what they needed was something that would push the wormhole apart from the inside by its gravitation. this matter would differ from every matter we know(it would have negative energy balance), so Thorne called it EXOTIC MATTER.
exotic matter can be created as a result of vacuum fluctuations. these fluctuations are some kind of CASIMIR EFFECT. they can occur at the horizon of a blackhole and possibly also of a wormhole.
if spacetime is constantly bent near the wormhole then the mechanism which is used to create it would actually act as a TIMEMACHINE that would displace future things to past things creating the wormhole.
Thorne did some mind experiments how to eliminate the possibilties of time paradoxes that would occure with timetravelling. one of his theories was, that when you were travelling back in time, the possibility of creating a paradox, such as killing your own mother would be zero. with other words: WHATEVER HAPPENED, HAPPENED.
A student of Thorne stated that ELECTROMAGNETIC FLUCTUATIONS which would also occur near a wormhole could actually destroy it. for a short time these fluctuations could become nearly infinitely big before the wormhole could be used as a timemachine.
now let me make the connection to our favorite show.
as we know from dr. chang, the unique properties of the island create some kind of casimir effect. these vacuum fluctuations have created the pocket of exotic matter. i think that when you turn the donkey wheel you charge your exit (wormhole) with exotic matter in order to stabilize it and travel to saudi arabia.
as you need a constant bending of spacetime to create a wormhole in the first place, you can assume that the island is such a place. this explains why the island can not be found and why there's a time descrepancy between the island and the outside world.
the wormhole beneath the orchid created the pocket of electromagnetic energy which was contained after radzinsky drilled it in 1977. from then on the fluctuation began and there was a huge build-up every 108 minutes. with the swan protocol the energy was again contained until desmond destroyed the station and probably the whole anomaly. what desmond did was actually making time travelling possible, because, as we know from above, the electromagnetic fluctuations hinder the wormhole from being used as a time machine. so i think the donkey wheel could not be used until the turning of the fail save key.
although this seems a pretty good explanation, there's still a question remaining: where does all the energy come from which is necessary to create such a spacetime bending? you may come up again with aliens, but the more convicing answer imho is: from other universes. yes, i believe in multiple universes on LOST, and that the island is actually a gateway between them. if there was such a big electro magnetic anomaly (which can tear planes apart) in only one universe, then the whole magnetic field of the earth would be distorted.
all this is not hard and proven science but theoretically possible like even steven hawking states, so why shouldn't the writers use it on LOST?
i know that this theory doesn't cover it all, for example the time jumps and the island moving, it would be nice if you could help me with that. anyway, thanks for reading.
