A fairly short theory here but I thought is was an interesting way of looking at thing. Admitidly it doesn’t go on to explain the finer details of LOST rather just a general concept. Maybe if it makes sense some of you can expand on it. But anyway here it goes…..
What if we have been witnessing the final stages of a scenario that Jacob and MIB have been setting up over a series of time loops. In the season 5 finale we saw Jacob visiting our losties and seemingly effecting important events in their past. Something that I found strange was why we saw him visit them at such different times in their lives. Kate and Sawyer as kids, Jack, Jin and Sun a few years prior to the crash and Hurley after they had already left the island for the first time.
I’ve been learning HTML at the moment and I started to think of the show in this way. Jacob is the programmer and the events on the island are the end product (the final goal I have no idea of). So Jacob sets up the scenario for 815 to crash on the island and then has a look at the end product….
It hasn’t come out like he wanted though so he goes back into his HTML code (the past) and changes a few “Variables”, maybe Kate made some bad decisions on the island first time round so he goes back and visits her as a kid to alter her path leading her to the island. He then goes back and has a look at the outcome again….
It’s progressed nearer to what he wants but something else doesn’t turn out quite right so he delves back into the code to make some more changes. Now I am assuming that the instances in which we have seen Jacob visit our losties aren’t the only times he has done this and we may see more of it in season 6.
Now a few observations that could support this theory...Maybe from the moment our losties first landed on the island they stepped out of time and therefore retain their memories of their past that lead to the initial crash. They are then unaware of any changes Jacob makes to their past from that point on. Maybe first time round Locke couldn’t walk on the island which wasn’t useful to Jacob so he went back an touched him after his fall and healed his back! When we see the crash Locke can instantly walk but that because in that alter iteration he never couldn’t walk, he just doesn’t remember this version of his past.
Another possibility is that if Jacob decides that someone is not required on the island he goes back and alters their path so that they don’t get on the flight, we then see them die on the island as a result. Maybe smokie is like an anti virus program that removes unwanted viruses and when he “reads” someone he is looking through their past to see if they are still meant to be there and if not he kills them?
Apologies for the length of this post it turned out longer than intended. I’m sure there are loads of holes in what I’ve said but that’s what the comments section is for! So comment away!
