He knew that he was never going to see john locke again not just because he killed him but because it was part of a con that he and jacob were playing on the man in black. I think they gave him what he thought was a loophole but is really a manhole for him to fall into. I think Jacob and the man in black are physcial manifestations of two different realitys both viable but with very different consquecences for the human race. In the pilot episode Jack woke up apart from the other losties. The reson for this i think is that he died in the plane crash and someone possibly, Christian moved the body to an alternate reality and switched it with the alternate version of Jack, and thats why his tattoo that reads he walks among us but is not one of us. I get the feeling, (based on nothing more concrete than that i don't think hurley is talking to dead people, i think he is seeing people in this alternate reality)that in the ! end which reality survives will be up to him to choose. I think it will a difficult choice for hurley and for us fans but i think it will have to be made by a very HONEST charecter.
