It seems that most people have fallen into the whatever happened happened camp; however, if this is true, there has to be a twist.
For example, most people figured that the island was moving through time at the end of S4; the twist was the time skipping that occurred at the beginning of S5.
Briefly, here's my idea for a twist on the whatever happened, happened theory-- Jacob's death, and not the Incident, is the real reset event.
What this implies is that Jacob, much like Locke's watch, has been continuously looping through time. He never ages, since this would prevent him from completing the loop and create a paradox.
Assuming that the man in black succeeded in killing Jacob, this would prevent him from completing the loop, and thus change the history of the island. Jacob would no longer bring the Black Rock or Rousseau's raft to the island (explaining why the numbers are still being broadcast in Ep. 316).
This would not have prevented 815 from crashing on the island, since Desmond caused this event, and not Jacob. However, it will have unforeseen consequences for the characters and the island itself in Season 6.
