SHORT UNIVERSAL THEORY:
The short of it is, that time was coming to an end. Call it the appocolypse or what have you, but mankind had calculated (valenzetti equation) that the end of days was approaching, and they did this, because the island had guided them to do so.
The island itself of course has tremendous powers, which allow it both sentience, and the ability to manipulate time. But it needed men to correct the situation with the upcoming end of days. In order to solve this problem, then men the island choose to correct the big problem, had to use the island's own properties to manipulate time in a way the island couldn't on its own, and send the island back in time, in order for mankind to have enough time to solve the problem.
So these men who jumped back in time along with the island recruited more men off island to help solve this problem by establishing the Dharma Initiative in the past. And this group began experiments in the hopes of avoiding the end of the world.
But the island, having come from the future, was able to understand that there were forces working against this, mainly the entire idea of course correction. The island itself understood that the end of time was inevitable, and so if it was going to avoid it, then it was going to have to set up its own very long con to avoid fate itself.
And so it began to recruit our Losties, while the build up to the Dharma initiative was going on. As it did this, it required molding the losties into a form it could use, coaching them towards positions of leadership, so that when the time came, they could do what was needed.
Fate then had to be fooled, and so the Island drug our Losties into its own past, conceling them, until the right moment, where it could lead them back into the present in order for them to complete the mission of saving time itself.
So while Dharma built all the science, the island needed a hidden force (our losties) to actually implement its plan. And that plan will be to save the world.
The forces working against this, are fate and course correction. Pick who you will to represent these, but they stand to ensure that things don't change, perhaps because they believe that it is better that they don't. It may be that changing things, in order to avoid this end of days event, is actually the worse of two evils. Since the island doesn't know what to expect, even if it completes its mission of avoiding the end of time, it also doesn't know what the consequences are.
So once the island lept back in time, and began moving forward, it utilized Dharma and our losties simultaneously to solve a problem of the end of time. The men who initially sent the island back in time were ancestors of "The Others", and they have remained on island to guide this process by whatever means necessary.
In the end, when our losties pop back into the present, "The War" will be fought over whether or not they complete their mission is completing the island's goal.
