I was just reading a post about whether or not the 1954 timeline would be revisited and it got me thinking about what bits and pieces we still had to clean up in season 6.
Starting with 1954, lets think about what happened. Richard was just hanging out, and of course at some point took Jughead underground, but that's not the real question. The real question is what the US Military was doing there, and why they had a hydrogen bomb. If they were just testing it, then still how they did they get to the island, was it releated to how Dharma found the island via The Lamp Post? Whatever the answer to that may be, then how did hostilities end between the military and The Others, and how soon after 1954, did Dharma first arrive? These are still some heavy questions that have to be addressed from that period.
The Ancient Days - We don't know much about that brief period that Sawyer and Co. flashed to where we got our first full glimpse of the back of the statue. But something happened there. There was obviously a civilization, and most likely Jacob was apart of whatever storyline took place then. I don't guess Richard was, but it seems clear that whatever was going on way back when is extremely important to the overall story and I can't imagine we won't revisit this period for a more lengthy stay.
The 1800's - The Black Rock. Enough said really, but we have to, HAVE TO, go back at some point and see exactly what happened here. Who were these people, how did the ship wind up in the middle of the Island, and what happened to them? Not to mention is seems likely that this is the point in time where the statue became a foot.
Early 1900's - It was after the Black Rock that somehow it's journal came to reside with the Hanso's. How did it get off the ship. Did somebody else come. What did it have to do with the funding of Dharma? Some weird stuff happened here, esspecially as it relates to Alvar Hanso. How come nobody considers this guy to be the most mysterious of all. We've seen a fuzzy image of him in a dark window on a grainy video, and that's it. Something is very odd here, and something big happened during this time.
1978 - 1992 - Simply put, we know nothing about this period. Radzinsky found himself living in the Swan with Kelvin Inman, but before that he was involved with helping to finish building a new Swan and countdown timer. Ben becomes more integrated with the Others, Widmore and Eloise leave the Island, and of course there is a major leadup to the Purge. We still don't really know what in the hell that was about. That's a 14 year period we're completely in the dark on, and it included some major league events.
The Future - I just don't think the show will end without showing us a glimpse of the future. What happens to these characters 10 years after the show. It'll be quick. A montage. Perhaps, we'll get extended looks at select characters, but something will happen as it relates to the future.
So all of these time periods have to be explored, not to mention what happens in the present. But to be honest, as I look at the 2007 time period, I don't see much for them to do. There's a skirmish going on between The Man In Black and Ilana's group, and the losties will be involved. But we've seen everything on the island, so we're not going to have a whole season dedicated to exploring something like the hatch, as we did in season 2.
The only think left to see, sadly, is the temple. We'll wind up there, but I just can't see a whole season that takes place exclusively in the present of the Island.
And that's good, because as mentioned, we have a lot of ground in the past to cover. Ben will have a flashback covering the 80's, and maybe 2 for this long period. Richard will have one covering the Black Rock. Widmore may even have one, covering the 50's. Jacob will have one covering Ancient times. And don't forget there's probably several key things to see off island through the eyes of Jack, Hurley, Desmond, Sawyer, Kate, Locke, and Sayid at least. Considering a big multicentric premier and finale, that gets us to 14 of the 17 episodes this season.
What else do you think will be covered, and from what characters perspective?
