I in no way endorse the Reset theory. I believe the whole debate between the two is based on the old lost debate of Science Vs Faith. I side with science. I think this is too intellectually stimulating a series to be resolved with fairies and gods. I love the Mythological aspects of the show, but my hopes are that gods won't factor into the end game as much as belief systems and their manipulative aspects will. Part of me dreads the opposite will happen. If it does, nothing that happened in these 5 seasons has any impact at all. All storylines will have to be melted down and retold.
right there's meant to be a list so here goes.
All events in the past 5 seasons would be completely unneccesary if time resets.
A whole new story would have to be fulfillingly resolved in one season. Even if some old storylines overlapped, i don't think the story could play out in a satisfying manner.
Matthew Fox said in his Monte Carlo interview, that the Jack Vs Locke story would come to a head. How is Jack going to get mad at Locke if they land in LA-X and part ways? What reason would they have not to part ways?
We know that Hawking remembers what happened to Faraday :'(. Widmore remembers meeting Locke in the 50's. Richard remebered Locke so vividly from the 50's he actually went to see him multiple times throughout his life. Marvin Candle references the Incident. Also he references this as the reason the button must be pushed. Which supports my idea referenced in the opening scene theory below.
(I think also that Ben does remember what happened between him and Sayid, It's not been confirmed, but if you watch the episode where Ben meets Sayid whilst being held prisoner in the Hatch, as soon as Ben lays eyes on him, the Terror on his face is visible. I remembered this because it seemed like Ben was really shocked but back then I couldn't see why.)
So, if all of these things ALWAYS happened, as Miles points out to hurley, then what grounds are there for any of the actions of the time travelling losties not having already happened? They are performing these actions IN THE PAST so whereas for them, its the first time round in the 70's, their actions are PART OF THE ISLANDS HISTORY.
As to the opening scene....it really could be anything. Matthew Fox stated that it will pick up right where we left off. But that could be a distortion of the truth. So this idea is mostly intuitive and based on how i feel the series will start to resolve itself.
Fade in from white. The island shakes. Cut to a beam of light dissapearing down the hole juliet is in. Chaos all around. Wait....is that a familiar face we see? maybe Jack or Kate...Nothing has happened. All they have done is CREATED A NEED FOR THE BUTTON IN THE SWAN. Whatever Happened, Happened.(its possible they may flash forward to when desmond turned the failsafe key....feels a bit like too easy of an explanation though) Jack looks confused and angry. (It was his destiny to cause the incident, it was set in stone as his destiny because it had ALREADY HAPPENED. Just not to him. This is not destiny of the spiritual kind, but of scientific worth.) Jack is distraught. All of it was for nothing. He was acting completely erraticly because he was becoming a man of faith.
to take it a little further, and also to come straight back in on BOTH timelines...
Cut to Locke and Ben walking out of the Temple, Faced with a fearful but hostile crowd. Torches are lit in the trees. We see figures, perhaps hooded, coming out of the Jungle. These figures are revealed to be a selection maybe only one or two, of our time travelling losties. Jack is angry at Locke. Maybe he doesn't yet realise who he really is. He shouts to him that he became a man who believed in Destiny. That he started to believe what Locke had told him. And that nothing good came of it.
I would like for this to be the general case, because it would be stimulating anough and not require more than a few episodes to explain clearly. And then we can get down to some answers. Also, Matthew fox stated that there would be only one timeline from about a third of the way in. At first we will be shown a) how the losties survived (or not as the case may be) from the 70's through to the present day. And at the same time, scenes from the 2008 timeline, such as Illana and her crew being in their boat (without the box ;)) shooting at a boat that has been stolen from them. And also possibly setting up the idea of a war between....well, whoever its between.
A couple of last points and ideas. And some paraphrasing of Douglas Adams (in caps). Hurley and Charlie Would have fit perfectly into any of his books :)
ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS, HAPPENS.
People have been citing the rumours that dead losties are going to return as proof for the Reset Theory. I mean, come on. We've never seen dead people make an appearance on the show? Locke was dead throughout most of this season :'( but he still played a major part in it.
ANYTHING THAT, IN HAPPENING, CAUSES SOMETHING ELSE TO HAPPEN, CAUSES SOMETHING ELSE TO HAPPEN.
If the time travellers are indeed skipped through time to when desmond turns the failsafe key, or even to when the plane crashes, I will fly to america and punch Jack Bender in the Face =P
ANYTHING THAT, IN HAPPENING CAUSES ITSELF TO HAPPEN AGAIN. HAPPENS AGAIN.
Team Darlton have said that by the time its over, it will be obvious that they had a game plan all along. This would imply that it will be like Fight Club, where you can watch it again from the start and pick up things you didnt realise were there. Examples of this could be - When John gives his compass to Sayid, Which compass is it? and which Locke is it? - Ben being introduced to Sayid in the Hatch - And, of course, Adam and Eve.
I feel that this emphasises the whatever happened happened theory, as all the events we would be seeing in a new light have already happened. So to speak. And to have the time travellers have been there all along, since before the plane crash, would be an amazing reveal. Could explain the whispers....
IT DOESNT NECCESSARILY DO IT IN A CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER, THOUGH.
Just had a thought...what if Jughead Causes all the losties from the time when the hatch exploded to fly back in time to the 70's? Far fetched i know, but it could explain the dead people coming back, and also make the fight between Jack and Locke be between Jack and Locke, Not Jack and MIB/Flock/Esau/whatever it is. To be honest, i hope that doesnt happen.
