Before this theory, I suggest you catch up on LOST, if you don’t know your stuff already!!
When I read the theory on , I was inspired. It got me thinking, if the reason only jack, kate, sayid and Hurley were the only ones to go back to 1977 was because they were ALWAYS supposed to do that, and Sun, Locke and Ben didn’t because Sun would’ve been dead, a la pregnancy issues, and Locke and Ben were banished after turning the wheel - then that is sort of contradictory of the whole WHH theory, because they would never have been in 1977, because they would have ALWAYS made the same decisions and ALWAYS done the same things - (I hope your following) but then I got thinking… what would have allowed them to make a different decision this time round, and go against what always happened, maybe causing the “horrible consequences” that Ben and Ms Hawking speak of in the first few episodes of season 5 ( maybe a paradox on Back to the future Doc Brown untangling of the universe proportions)
“If you don’t get all the Oceanic 6 back to the island, God help us all” - Ms Hawking
So if we go back and look at the chain of events that lead to leaving the island we can trace the fork in the road, so to speak, to Charlie unjamming the signal in The Looking Glass which was blocking all communication to and from the island. IF Charlie hadn’t disarmed the station, there would have been no phone call to the freighter, no arrival of the freighter folk, and no helicopter to take the Oceanic 6 off the island. Remember in the Season 3 finale, Locke’s famous words before Jack contacts the freighter.
“You’re not supposed to do this Jack” -Locke (is he being as literal as it gets)
Ok, well if Charlie managed to change events, causing something to happen that was never supposed to happen - something to test the whatever happened, happened debate, how was this possible! And the answer - Desmond!!
“You are uniquely special, and the rules do not apply to you” - Faraday
When Faraday meets with Desmond, he stresses that the rules (and I assume these are the rules of time and space itself) do not apply to him. Think about it, Charlie was supposed to die by lightning in episode 4 of Season 3, but Desmond saved him, then he was supposed to die by drowning, then by breaking his neck, then by an arrow to the neck… but Desmond saved him every time and delayed his death… until Charlie could swim down to the Looking Glass and allow communication with the freighter, and in turn the events that lead to the departure of the Oceanic 6. But how does Desmond do this, because when he turned the failsafe key in The Swan, he was exposed to unique electromagnetic energy, and whatever else the failsafe included, causing him to become unstuck in time, and see flashes of the future, giving him freewill to change the outcome - therefore being able to change whatever happens and in turn whatever happened!
Now, if this is true, we can also assume, in looking at the larger mythology of the show, that Jacob and the MIB must have some power over these events, as we can assume that MIB for definite has been playing with our characters like chess pieces for his own end - to find a ‘loophole’ to kill Jacob.
So with this in mind, I can only speculate that MIB may have wanted the swan implosion that caused Desmond to become unstuck in time, because if this hadn’t happened, Charlie would have died in the lightning and no one else would have been able to turn of the jamming equipment as it was designed for a musician. So the implosion caused Desmond to become special which prolonged Charlie’s life which allowed the freighter to arrive which allowed the Oceanic 6 to leave the island and forced Ben to turn the wheel which caused the island to jump in time which allowed MIB (disguised as Locke) to tell time travelling Locke to leave the island and die - creating his loophole!! He could assume Locke’s form and manipulate Richard into taking him to Jacob and manipulating Ben into killing him.
So if MIB wanted Desmond to become unique how could he have manipulated events to cause the implosion. If we look at things, Locke opened the hatch and began pushing the button to dispel the electromagnetic energy safely UNTIL Eko had a dream in which his brother, Yemi, told him to take Locke to the ?. It was this that caused Locke to lose faith in the Swan as at The ?, Locke began to believe that The Swan was a lie. So can we assume that MIB came into Eko’s dreams and used him to take Locke to The ? And cause Locke to lose faith in the button, and in turn cause the meltdown which forced Desmond to turn the failsafe and become special which in turn lead to all of the events above - the final being the loophole.
“Don’t open it Mr Locke, don’t open that thing” - Walt
But being all powerful, cant we assume Jacob had some countermeasures. Maybe Jacob did try to stop MIB’s plans. I believe that Jacob could have some unique connection with Walt, as Walt has abilities over electromagnetism for a start as evidence of his affect over birds who use electromagnetism as a means of directions. In season 1, when Locke touches Walt, Walt suddenly, with no knowledge of the hatch, warns Locke “not to open it”. If Locke has listened, he would never have met Desmond and Desmond would have continued down in the hatch pushing the button - and there would have been no way of a loophole for MIB.
“Now get out of the ditch Mr Locke, you have work to do” - Walt
In season 3 finale, there is another vision of Walt. Now what’s interesting is that if it was a vision manifested by MIB, the Walt would have been the Walt that we saw before he left the island right? But its not, it seems this Walt is the real Walt, whos grown up in the outside world. Maybe it is the real Walt, who has the ability to ‘be in places he isn’t supposed to be’ (as said by Ms Klugh) with the help of Jacob to tell Locke to kill Naomi, and stop Jack communicating with the freighter, stopping them getting a location on their signal, and stopping them coming to the island, stopping the Oceanic 6 leaving on the helicopter. In season 4, Jack even gets appendicitis, probably from Jacob, to stop him leaving. These were all attempts to stop the Oceanic 6 leaving and in turn stop John Locke leaving the island to bring them back and dying, allowing for MIB’s loophole. Jacob even takes Locke’s ability to walk in season 1 in Deus Ex Machina to deter him from pursu! ing the opening of the hatch and stop MIB’s string of events to get his loophole
Jacob: “Look’s like you’ve found your loophole”
MIB: “And you have no idea what Ive been through to get here”
As you can see Jacob and MIB have been tugging at events to pull in their favour, and MIB won the tug of war, and successfully killed Jacob. Now, doesn’t MIB’s statement seem a lot more true, he’s been manipulating the lives of many characters and intricate events to get to his ends. Jacob seems to have been defeated - but what of Jacob has been through a lot more to get to his loophole so to speak.
“Each one of us was brought here for a reason” - Locke
Jacob has been seen to be the one responsible for bringing peope to the island and why would he bring a bunch of people that could be used to kill him, what if Jacob has a plan of his own, he didn’t seem that bothered with dying in the season 5 finale, he welcomed it. As we saw, Jacob touched all of our characters, and I believe he was setting up his defence, a group of people to fight for him after he has gone. I believe our survivors will come together to defeat MIB and save the island… how? Well we’ll have to wait until January and season 6.
“They’re coming” - Jacob
I hope you’ve enjoyed my theory and I want to thank everyone else for giving me masses of inspiration! This theory is for you. Leave your thoughts.
