Like others have said, Lost is a Chess/Backgammon game between Jacob and MIB fighting for control of the island, using the characters as pawns in their struggle, which got me thinking of the ramifications of some of the characters.
Claire:
Claire's plot is of course centered around her child Aaron. Claire is essentially sent to the island by that psychic guy in season 1. She is told that he can't be raised by another but then she abandons him and Kate raises him for awhile. Christian (who apparantly is being controlled by MIB) tells Locke that he must bring everyone back, "and I mean everyone." But later Kate has a dream where Claire screams, "Don't bring him back."
I think that MIB wants him to bring him back so he can kill him. But Jacob wants him to stay off the island awhile so he can develop, grow, and eventually comeback to defeat MIB. Maybe Sun's kid or Walt plays into this too. Jacob's probably the one who got the psychic to bring him in the first place.
Jack:
Jack is essentially ordained by Locke as the leader in Jack's first episode in the first season, white rabbit. In that episode, Jack almost falls off a cliff and dies because of a vision of Christian. So, I don't think MIB wants Jack to become the leader, but Jacob does.
I think MIB turns the tables by manipulating Jack into wanting to leave the island so bad, so that eventually the donkey wheel would be turned, time would start looping, and MIB could eventually get his revenge on Jacob through the "loophole." When Locke blows up the sub, he's doing what Jacob wants, preventing Jack from leaving the island. Or maybe that's what MIB wants, to tantilize him to get him so obsessed with leaving that he eventually brings in the freighter people.
Echo:
Echo is told in a dream to find the "?". When Locke and Echo find the ? (the Pearl station), that essentially causes Locke to lose faith in the island. Then, the button doesn't get pushed, the Swan explodes, and Charles and Penelope Widmore are able to find the island, thus bringing the freighter people into the fray, thus allowing the Oceanic 6 to get off the island, thus getting the donkey wheel turned, thus starting the time flips, and thus MIB finding his loophole.
So, I think that dream was caused by MIB. If you remember, a few episodes before the "?", Echo is approached head on by the black smoke monster but not killed yet, so that he can MIB can use the ? dream and get the chain of events started.
Then, in the 3rd season, Locke is told to save Echo from the polar bear, which he does (I think that came from Jacob). But then, two episodes later the smoke monster kills him in cold blood, presumbably from MIB because he's done using Echo.
Locke:
I think Locke was originally chosen by Jacob (we know he cured him when he was pushed off the building by his father). I think he did cure him from paralysis. But MIB eventually tricks Locke into finding the loophole he needs to kill Jacob.
In the first Locke episode, Walkabout, Locke is approached by something that's rustling the trees while he's hunting the boar. We don't to see the thing but we get to see Locke's expression. It looks as though he saw a god in wonderment and awe. Later, in the first season finale, Locke sees the black smoke monster (when he's coming back from the Black Rock with the dynamite) and gives an expression of horror and fear, and then does try to run away. The black smoke monster then tries to drags Locke into a hole but Jack and Kate save him with the dynamite.
Later, in the third season, echo episode, cost of living, he tells Echo he orignally saw not the black smoke monster but a great white light. I think the white light was being controlled by Jacob which Locke was drawn to, "I looked into the eye of this island, and it was beautiful." But the black smoke monster horrified him.
Ironically, MIB would eventually have his way with him by telling Locke that he must kill himself, thus creating the loophole.
There's definitely a battle to control Locke between Jacob and MIB. MIB uses the cabin to infiltrate him, he's the one who says "help me," and he must have given him that dream where Horace tells him, "find me, and you'll find Jacob."
Jacob doesn't want Jack to get off the island and set off the chain of events, so he sends a vision of Walt to tell Locke to kill Naomi and stop Jack at all costs, but Locke backs down.
Jacob also uses Walt in the first season, when Walt says, "Don't go down there," to Locke (referring to the hatch). Locke finding the hatch creates the whole sequence of events leading to Jacob's death. So, I think Jacob is in touch with Walt and his special powers.
Ben:
Ben probably got the cancer from MIB to lose his faith in Jacob, Jacob sends the spinal surgeon to correct that, etc. It appears that both MIB and Jacob want Ben to kill Jacob, which leads me to believe that Ben didn't really kill Jacob, or that Jacob has a plan to get around it, that he conned MIB into thinking he died. Maybe he found a loophole to the loophole? I wonder what will happen when Ben and Locke leave Jacob's place, now that everyone knows it's not the real Locke?
I wonder if this is how Desmond's going to get tied back into it, using his special powers to save Jacob?
Juliet:
Juliet's obviously most important because set off the bomb at the end. I think the pocket of energy absorbed this explosion and just created the incident. When Jack originally threw it down there, some sort of magnetic cushion caused it to not blow up, and when Juliet flew down there, the same magnetic cushion saved her life. So, I think everyone will be just fine, the incident will happen, the plane will crash, etc., except for Juliet because she was within the cushion next to it. So, she's probably dead.
But, probably the rest of the Oceanic 6 will be transported back to 2007 because Jacob touched them all.
Anyway, I could go on with other characters, but it's late and I'm tired and getting a headache from thinking too much about this, so I'll leave it incomplete.
