A have a theory regarding, Ilana and her crew perhaps branding Frank "a candidate".
I think in the big picture,what if, as of the start of season 6, the jughead was detonated successfully, but due to the sheer amount of electromagnetism going against it, the effects were "unpredictable".
This causing all the losties around the area of the swan site, to be exposed to the magnetism. (much like desmond when he in turn, eventually activates the fail safe key.)
Therefore, what happened to Des, happens to the rest. The consciousness travels back to before 815. (again like Des)
Richard Alpert also stated last season, that he saw all the losties die. What if by this he means, simply, the 815's were as good as dead when there consciouness travelled back off the island.There bodys left much like young bens was once being shot by Sayid.
This being said, he takes the losties into the temple, as he did with Ben. What happens there, who knows.
But what i think could be plausible, is that somehow some way, the losties have to find themselves a constant, when there consciouness has travelled off the island.
What if this very constant...was Frank Lapidus. The pilot that was SUPPOSED TO FLY 815...but never did.
Perhaps Jacob visited him, touched him must like he did the losties and prevented him from ever getting on 815. let alone piloting it.
Could this then link in with why the Pilot was killed in Episode 1 of the first series. Because it was supposed to be Frank.
Say smokey was in fact Flocke, Jacobs arch enemy, killing off people as he goes, trying to win the war between himself and his nemesis.
I appreciate some of these ideas have already been theorized, but link it in with the idea that Frank could be the constant for all of the survivors, and you might just have yourself an explanation for "the candidate"
