Hi guys,
Just had a thought, hopefully you guys can help me flesh this out. I was thinking about the Ben comment in "Dead is Dead" when he quotes the titular line in conversation with Sun... I don't have time to look up the transcripts right now, but it's something to the effect of, I've seen crazy stuff on this island, but never someone coming back from the dead, dead is dead, etc. I believe that at a later time Richard reiterates this point as well. I'll get back to this in a moment...
I think many of us had assumed that the apparations of the dead on the island have been manifestations of the smoke monster... The producers, I believe, confirmed Yemi as such. Another apparition that I believe would fit this description would be Bens mother in The Man Behind the Curtain, S3... Ben obviously saw what he thought was his mother whom he knew to be dead. Richard seemed to know something about what he was talking about when he confronted him in the jungle later in the episode... he appears suprised, but not completely shocked.
So here's my question... if Ben and Richard both have some idea that the manifestations are products of the smoke monster, what made John Locke different? Why not just automatically assume that this is a vision, a manifestation of the monster, and not actually John Locke risen from the grave? I can only imagine that there was something different about him, something that alerted them both that this was not a manifestation but in fact the real John Locke, or at least an incredibly close copy.
Then of course I contradict my own theory by thinking back to the tunnels, when Locke leaves just in time for Alex to appear to Ben... It just seems kind of strange to me that neither Richard or Ben would think that it wasn't really Locke, given that Ben has now seen two apparitions of dead people and, I can only assume, Richard has some idea of what's behind them. Could this just be a goof or does this prove that they are seperate entities?
