This is not a full theory, just a snippet.
Once we had it confirmed that the statue was Tawaret I focused on the islands issue with babies.
We had it made clear to us that babies were able to be delivered on the island by Dharma Initative folk when we saw Ethan born. Whilst we didnt see him concieved on the island I think its a fair assumption.
What is also confirmed for us is that the Statue was their in its entirity when he was born; as we get a glimpse of it from behind when Sawyer and co are part of Dharma (and help with Ethans birth).
So its seems (almost too obvious) that the reason that the island no longer allows babies to be born on the is caused by destroying the Statue of Tawaret (Goddess of Birth,re-birth).
Could it be the incidient that caused this? Some say that the destruction would have caused more damage. Im not sure.
I suspect we will find out in Season 6.
