(Apologies if this is old. I'm not very active in this department.)
There has always been tons of speculation on just who Jacob is, or what he represents. Same when it comes to the island. And now with the 'Man In Black,' Jacob's apparent foe. Are they gods? Are they good and evil? Possibilities at this point seem endless.
But what if...
Jacob is Fate. Think about it. We saw him touch several of our Losties. They were 'touched by the hand of fate.' When Jacob and the MIB were talking about people coming in that opening scene, MIB said something like "You brought them here." Aha, 'Fate brought us here.' People seem to just do whatever Jacob asks, because 'you don't question Fate.'
So, if Jacob is Fate, could we assume that the island itself is Destiny? Jack and Locke were always butting heads about this area of things, 'This is our destiny!' I think most people agree that Fate & Destiny go hand in hand. Jacob/Fate's home is the island/Destiny.
What does that make the Man In Black? Science.
From the beginning of the show we've known there are going to be two camps...whether it came down to black/white, good/evil, beach/caves, or science/faith. (Ok, I get that faith and fate are not necessarily the same but still...) I think we've been told from the beginning that there would be both a science and faith(?) explaination for everything. (It's been a while, correct my wording on that if need be, lol)
Jacob and the MIB are obviously foes, opposing camps. MIB is determined to beat Fate. It's taken so long because faith, fate, destiny are very strong beliefs. It's going to take alot for some people to accept science can explain some things. So one could argue that science (the electromagnetic booboo) is what caused 815 to crash, but one could also argue that fate is what brought our Losties here. MIB, Jacob, and the island....science, fate, and destiny.
I'm sure there are more examples that I could pull up but it's been a while since I've gone back and watched older episodes. I think this is a good start though. :)
