Well if flight 815 doesn't crash the freighter doesnt come to the island so does the helicopter, then Desmond never leaves the island to go to the freighter. So it goes to say that Jack isn't doing everybody good by trying to change things. Hes changing Desmonds life dramatically. He will never leave the island, reunite with Penny and have his child Charlie.
But also you have to think if the hatch doesnt get built and their is no button to press what would Desmond be doing for the 3 years he was on the island?
