I've seen all kinds of theories on this blog about "this person is Jacob", and "that person is Jacob", but as far as I know this is a new take on "blank" is Jacob.
My theory starts on the beach in front of the statue circa 1849. We all know the scene from the beginning of "The Incident" parts 1&2 where we see two men arguing over the "Fate" of "They" which suggests that these two men are above or better yet outside of the realm of "They". One can assume that the "They" these two are speaking of are the people that through out the years get stranded on their Island. Another theory I've seen recently is the "They" spoken of could be another more "equal" group yet to be seen or "outed" as it were. There have also been theories that Blackie is "Esau", but I do not subscribe to that idea one bit. This, in my opinion, is not a twisted re-telling of an old testament story. Nor do I think that Blackie is either "bad" or "good" per say,and I can say the same for Jacob.
I think that it is quite possible that Jacob may not be a "particular person" at all but more of a "mantle" or "title" and that it is held by whoever is making decisions for the Island or more specifically, certain people on the Island, at any particular given time. Like both guys are really two side of one coin that is called "Jacob" I think the reason Blackie calls "Man in White" Jacob is because the black rock is his responsibility and the "Man in Black" wants nothing to do with them.
I think the "Jacob that Richard and the original "Others" follow is the "Man in White". I believe that the "Richard" that young Ben saw was not in fact Richard at all but Blackie in disguise. I believe Ben has always followed "Black Jacob" through notes given by "Fake Richard", and that Widmore has always followed "White Jacob" Via "Real Richard". I believe that Richard is to "White Jacob" as Smokie is to "Black Jacob".
Now back to the "They" that were spoken of. My first thoughts were of course that "They" meant Losties of different eras or humans in general, but I now think that the "Jacobs of Black and White" are part of a Higher or more evolved race of people that have been given control of certain parts of the earth, and that it will be revealed that other certain characters were their peers all along and are the "They" spoken of. I/E Hawking, Walt, Brother Campbell, Alex, Aaron, Christian, and Horus, maybe more, I just can't think of them right now.
I think that these Higher humans can choose certain "regular" humans to help them and that is where the term "Candidate" comes into play. Past "candidates" were, Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Sayid, Jin, Sun, Hurley, Juliet, Illana, Brahm, and Widmore for "White Jacob". Past candidates for "Black Jacob" were, Ben, Locke, Ethan, Bea Klugh, Cindy and the kids from 815, Tom "Friendly", Mikhail, and Phil. Candidates for Hawking; Daniel, for Brother Campbell; Desmond, and Penny, for Alex; it was Carl, for Christian; it was Malkin, and
Claire, for Aaron it was Charlie, for Horus; most of the Dharma Initiative.
Anyway I think the "They" that are now coming are the still living "Higher people" and their candidates and that the war will be between the ones wanting to perpetuate the game, and the ones who want to end it.
