Bigger Fish; Bigger Loops
By back_gammon
I've never been a fan of the idea that the show will loop around and end where it began with Jack waking up in the jungle after a looping do-over plane crash. The idea was distasteful to me because it negated my emotional investment in everything that's happened so far. If it could be erased that easily, then what was the point?
But I'm now wondering if there's a bigger mobius strip ending of sorts in the offing, one that preserves WHH and my emotional investment in everything that's happened to the characters.
What if the final scene of the very last show next year shows a guy in a white shirt cooking fish on a rock on the beach. A modern day cruise ship sits off in the distance. A guy in a black shirt walks up. Camera pulls back. The black shirt guy is AJ aka Locke. The white shirt guy is Jacob aka Jack Shepard. (I'm thinking Jack Shepard, but you can fill in the blank with another candidate's name. It could be Lapidus, Ben, Kate, Sawyer, Hurley, Jin, Sun, Desmond, baby Aaron, or anyone you like.)
This does not contradict Jacob's statement that it only ends once. We have no reason to believe that Jacob's death ends anything, especially with the coming war. Neither is there reason to believe the war ends anything. If it did, then why all the god help us talk?
Perhaps both Jacob and AJ have inhabited many bodies over the centuries as they reincarnate. (You'll recall the name on the side of the van dead Locke's corpse was in was an anagram for reincarnate.) As Jacob stated, everything that happens before the final end is progress.
Regarding the loophole, it's possible I had it wrong. I've been obsessing about the rules and the law for months, but I've been looking for one single loophole in the laws that allowed AJ to kill Jacob. But like most complicated law texts, perhaps numerous legal cosmic loopholes may exist. Each time AJ finds one he gets to kill Jacob. That loophole then gets a new law to close it, but even as one loophole closes, new ones open...Jacob and AJ reincarnate into new bodies...new people are drawn to the island...Jacob and AJ continue to play out their conflicts, work on their issues...progress continues...and so on...the cycles continue...the Orouboros swallows its tail...
