Whatever happened, happened....unless something else happens. None of this has happened before and yet it kind of has. The events in the 70's and the events in the present day are perceived by us as an audience to be going on at the same time. In a way they are I suppose but for characters like Ben, Sun, Lapidus, Richard, and possibly Locke. Whatever the crew in the 1970's did while they were on the island in 1977 happened. Richard tells Locke he hasn't seen him for 3 years and he tells Sun he remembers Jin and crew from 1977 but mentions nothing of knowing them from 2004.
In an earlier episode this season the time-travel crew took an outrigger to try to reach the Orchid but were shot at by 316 survivors. The beach they found the boats on was their beach and their camp. The kitchen was there and there was Dharma food and beer litter everywhere. If in that flash they were 3 years in the future and the beach camp was still there then are we to believe that no matter what happened while Jack and co. were in the 70's flight 815 crashes on the island in 2004? Or is this some other timeline where a different plane crashes on the island in 2004? Which brings me back to the crew in the 1970's.
Sawyer and the rest had been living by the whatever happened, happened code for 3 years. They effectively managed to blend in to the Dharma Initiative by using what they already knew of them to their advantage. Had Jack, Kate, Sayid, and Hurley ended up at any other point in island past or future Sawyer's group would have most likely rode out the whole Dharma thing until they could avoid the purge. Sawyer, Jin, and Miles took security jobs which allowed them access to explore the island to look for their people while making sure they were in the middle of whatever was going on. We know that in the 70's Dharma had problems with the Hostiles. Sawyer and co. know what is going to happen but can now see it unfold. They choose to not interfere. Faraday accepted that he couldn't change anything only to realize that he could just by making the decision to do so. The decision has now fallen to Jack who despite realizing that his earlier time on the island was spent interfering becau! se of reason understands his destiny is to interfere.
But will this all happen again some other way? Remember somewhere in the outside world the 815 survivors are younger and going about their lives. Even if Jack can change the islands history are these people, this particular group of people destined to arrive on the island in some other way no matter what?
