I have thought a lot about this theory but really haven’t had much too really confirm my thoughts until last night…
Two powers are trying to control the island. In the Bible Jacob had a twin, Esau, Jacob was the trickster, but was loved by God, and Esau was the hunter who was hated by God and worshipped Idols. Jacob had tricked Esau out of his birthright by pretending to be him to their father Isaac just as Lost’s Jacob has some how tricked his brother out of ruling the island. Now Esau is out for revenge.
They both knew that John Locke was special but neither know which he will follow. Thus, Richard’s anger when young John chose the knife (hunter) and told him he had chosen wrong. Clearly John leaned toward the Hunter even early on, while Ben on the other hand uses intellect and tricks to get what he wants for the Island. Jacob either still unsure about John or hoping for a rebirth (spiritual/physical) wants John to move the island and be banished, not Ben and even tells John that he was the one who was supposed to move the island.
However upon John’s return he is not on Jacob’s side. I also find it interesting that John takes Ben to the temple for judgment but something intervenes and Ben falls to a lower older sanctuary that tells him to do what John says now. Although, we are talking about Ben, for now he seems even to betray Richards’ confidences to John. How Ben is going to play it however remains to be seen.
Like others I believe that the, “What lies in the shadow of the statue” people are going to be with John although at this point I am not really sure who or what they are going to fight and really only Windmore seems to know more about the war and which side to be on.
