From what was given to us in The Variable, I believe that they are controlling their own free will, and everything we have seen the losties do in the past did not happen when they crashed on the island. They are changing the past and by doing that they are creating huge repercussions to the island.
Daniel is right when he says they they must detonate the hydrogen bomb to correct the losties and everyone who does not belong to their own present time.
This is where i might go a little crazy, the bomb is detonated and corrects the "mistakes" all of the losties have done to the island in their time in the past but when the bomb is detonated they all disappear. Where they disappear to is the flight of Oceanic flight 815 as it is crossing the pacific. They go back to themselves right when the plane crashed into the island but the only difference is they they will not crash. They will go and land in L.A. But once they land onto the tarmac they will remember everything have have experienced in the last 3 years like a what happens when they flash through time.
However this affects season six...i still cant think up but thank you for your time to read this
