I adhere to the laws of, well, the universe, that, so far as we know, state that, in terms of time travel, if you went back in time, anything you did differently would not affect the 'future' at all. It would have already happened.
So I really adhere to 'whatever happened happened', and reckon that this is what Lost is all about, when we explore time travel.
But I do believe that there is a 'variable' that can change the past and future, and I do believe that this will turn out to be Desmond.
It would be interesting to know whether when Charlotte and Minkowski are 'flashing through time' whether they actually can take control of their actions. Charlotte is a very odd case in that she utters that she is "not allowed to eat chocolate before dinner", suggesting that she is 'seeing' this event in her past life, whilst for some reason speaking it in the, err, 'present'. I would argue that these two are not in control of events in their lives, and are simply powerless to dying.
HOWEVER, I am not saying that what happens to Charlotte is the same thing that happened to Minkowski, but it of course could be. If it's not, then it is simply what happens to Minkowski that is important to look at. Daniel didn't leave instructions for anyone else on the boat what to do if they started having these problems, and he had been around these people a lot longer a time than he had been around Desmond (long enough to grow a fondness for Charlotte, having presumably not ever met her before). I think the key question was whether Desmond had been subject to large amounts of electromagnetic 'energy', radiation, or not. Clearly, Dan knows this is key to what could happen on the island.
And sadly for Dan, I think he will have overlooked that only someone in Desmond's situation could ever be a variable in these equations. Whatever happened happened will be true, I believe, but Daniel is a clever guy, but perhaps he got so excited (poor Daniel, he was my favourite, and I'll miss him!) about finding out about the variables, and perhaps slightly blinded by the fact that he thought he could save Charlotte, he decided that he had to act quickly (before he lost the chance to blow up the 'exotic energy' when the Swan station started drilling.
But! I think the idea that there are separate timelines, excuse my French, blows. If Lost was five seasons long, I would entertain the notion of this being the last episode, and the last scene is 815 landing in LA. But we've got another season left; it doesn't make any sense that ending right now, and this seems the perfect chance for this to happen. Plus, the ending of the show is meant to be a nice ending for the characters of the show, this has been stated by team Darlton numerous times, not an ending for the island as we know it. If the ending is indeed this final 'course correction' then we have no final ending for characters such as Kate, who will be sent to jail, Sawyer, who still will not know who was to blame for his parents' deaths, and numerous others (Daniel, Juliet, Locke, even Eko).
However, one idea that wouldn't 'blow' as such, would be Desmond doing a bit of time travel work, but it would have to be done really well. The Constant is my favourite episode of Lost (I'm a romantic at heart), and here we saw time travel working, and being pulled off for the benefit of a character we all like (is there anyone that doesn't like Desmond?). Again, it's sad we haven't seen much of Des this year, and I hope he's around more next year. But he cannot be forgotten, surely? (Also, personally, after TPTB killed off Daniel, my next favourite character is Desmond, then Jack (oof, he's had a poor time as of late too), and I really want him back. More interaction with the main cast would be nice)
But yeah, sorry, I could ramble about this for ages. I could write a small book on why Daniel was amazing and should not have been killed off (for the sake of what?! A plot device?!), but really think that Des will turn out to be our actual variable. And I just hope this means we are going to see him next season in a much larger role.
And course correction finale for the lose.
