I believe that the statue is representative of the egyptian god Taweret, a hippo-like godess who symbolises childbirth and pregnancy. However, she became the demonic-wife of Apep, a snake/lizard/crocodile like demon who is the ultimate representation of darkness and evil. Always in battle with Ra, god of the sun, he the demon was known as Enemy of Ra. However, eventually, Tawaret was seen as a nicer figure, and became known as the protector who restrained Apep. Women's pregnancies were protected if they wore the symbol of Tawaret, the Ankh.
Now, we have seen Amy from DHARMA wearing the Ankh which she took from her husband and she is the first to give birth successfully on the island. I believe that the monster, who sounds alot like Apep, was peaceful and kept at bay until the statue of Taweret is destroyed. Wouldn't it be safe to assume that during the days of DHARMA and the time at which Amy gave birth, the statue is still standing and whole and something that the losties do, during the incident, or the detonation of the jughead, results in the statue's destruction... and the release or change of the monster, who no longer has his demon-wife to restrain it.
I also believe Ra to be Richard Alpert (notice how his enitials spell RA) and he is the enemy of the monster and the bringer of light, looking for a way to free his people.
