Consider this:
The 'variables' were brought to the island to ASSIST in course correction; something so big that the island couldn't correct it on its own, thus this possible time loop. ALTERNATE SCENARIO: Someone (Jacob?) brought them there to assist in something they thought should have happened differently.
If the first is true, it would mean that something is going to be changed because IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE, and the island has just failed in previous loop-iterations. Therefore, it's still whatever happened, happened, but for now, the island needs help in correcting something that wasn't supposed to happen in the first place. If the second is true, we'll find that WHH is a bitch again, but I think that won't happen. There's simply been too many hints (Desmond, for one).
I just think it would fit with everything we've seen. The island has brought people, allowed them to live, and has 'tested' them in certain moral circumstances. And don't forget of those "special" and able to commune with the dead. It's either looking for those it thinks are worthy to help right the flow of time, as well as establish order to the 'time-keepers' society (Others), or Jacob is trying to change things to help himself (and possibly the universe)("Help me").
I refuse to believe that everyone was "summoned" simply because they are supposed to go through events of the 70's. If that were true, this would be the last season.
Btw, I don't think this necessarily relates to the Incident. It could be something we haven't seen yet; something in season 6 that will be revealed as the cause of everything we have seen thus far; past or future we'll have to wait and see. Also, I don't necessarily think this possible 'correction' or 'change' will make everything we've seen irrelevant. How the writers would pull it off though, I have no idea.
