I believe Jack will succeed in detonating the Hydrogen bomb core, with the help of his trusty friend Sayid, genius of everything concerning wires and buttons.
As far as the viewer is concerned, we'll be left hanging with the belief that everyone in 1977 dies, the future of that time line is altered, and the notion of a 6th season will appear incongruous and unfathomable in relation to the previous 5 seasons.
However, I think that something Illana and Bram are planning, concerning whatever it is inside their metal box, will alter Jack's success(and this may not be revealed until the 6th season).
I believe we were given a hint with the riddle of the Statue's Shadow:
'What Lies in the Shadow of the Statue?'
I believe the answer is 'The Past'.
There is no statue, aside from a foot and lower calf, in the present. One could argue that, logically, there is nothing more than this remnant in the future, either. So, in the present and future, there is nothing in the shadow of the statue, because there really is no statue. However, in the past there is a statue and there is, likewise, a shadow.
I believe, whatever Illana and Bram are up to with their thing in the metal box, it concerns altering something farther in the past, prior to 1977, which could ultimately alter whatever it is Jack has successfully accomplished in 1977.
So, as long as Illana and Bram's success is 'a priori' to Jack's, there's the possibility that Jack's success is rendered moot, however successful and shocking it appears to be to the viewer at the culmination of the season finale.
Your thoughts are very much welcome. I'd love to know what others think. I just can't see them safely landing in LA. And, alternatively, I really can't see them all dying, either(at least not perma-death).
