I have just watched "Follow the Leader" and the revelation at the end of Locke wanting to kill Jacob was great. However, it got me thinking about something. Hearing Jacob ask for help is the event that started John Locke off on his quest, why would he kill this man whom imo, he ows so much to?
I believe that John is taking his people to *see* Jacob to show to them that everything they have been fed and told is a lie. He will not be killing Jacob in a sense, but he will be killing the mythos that surrounds him, and the power that people such as Alpert and Benjamin wield due to everyones unyielding faith in this man.
Looking back throughout the show, the first time that Jacob is mentioned is when John says it to Richard in 1957. Richards acknowledgment proves that the man or the myth surrounding Jacob must have existed by this point, but by the feel of the others, I get the impression by this point in time he is already being referred to in a messiah like way.
I do believe that Jacob is a real individual, and I would like to think that at some point, he held a great position of power within the others, but he was usurped by someone and the whole idea of how great a man he was was then twisted to form the idea that Jacob is a sort of god who can only speak to the chosen ones, who inturn look to be chosen by Richard. This is where I start to not like my theory because the only man who could pull this off would be Richard Alpert, the so called advisor. I like Richard, and I still hope his character has a major role to play, but at the moment, especially with his reactions to johns demands in "Follow the leader" I think he doesn't want the people to *meet* Jacob because his whole illusion will be brought crashing down.
Richard created the illusion of Jacob for his own reasons. Jacob is trapped somewhere, possibly in another plane or between time, but this is down to richards doing. The ash surrounding Jacobs cabin has been referred to by TPTB as a "controlling mechanism", and was something set up by Richard.
John Locked is going to show his people this. He is going to bring the real "man behind the curtain" out for all to see.
