This is my second post-season 5 theory. And this is a pretty simple, and obvious one. I dunno if it's been mentioned yet, the massive flux of theories since Last Wednesday are just too many to keep up with. In either case, I'll make it short and sweet.
Whomever Illana and Bram work for, their group, or their ancestors, or even they themselves, originally were responsible for building and trapping the Dark figure in the cabin, and it was built for such purpose, as a prison. This was so Jacob could be the only spirit left free to roam, the good guys ruling. They put the ash around it, as to keep him trapped.
The Dark figure had manipulated all this time loop stuff, the DI, everything, down to the last drop, and ended with Ben moving the island, so that Rose and Bernard could make their way to the past, as well as John Locke dying. This serves two purposes: firstly, proving to Richard that John Locke is a valiant and worthy leader to be led to Jacob "like Moses" so he can get Ben in close quarters to kill him. John Locke dying gives the Dark one a body form to usurp. Secondly, I'm sure we will get a 1977 flashback where Bernard is chasing Vincent around, and trips and smears the ash, freeing that Dark spirit from the cabin. So it makes me wonder, how deep the manipulative nature of the dark side goes... Did the Dark one give Rose cancer? *gasp* Manipulating her via the medium in Australia, to get on that plane, because he knew she'd end up here, be healed by Jacob on the island, and make it back to 1977, to free him from the cabin? Subsequently manipul! ated them all the way to the cabin to live? Like "ohhh hey Rose, check this out, a CABIN!" after Bernard was chasing a boar through the jungle.
This explains a few things:
1) Illana saying "someone's been using this cabin" (i.e. Rose and Bernard)
2) Their cabin actually BEING the same cabin which was burned. Now whether this was just reusing sets/props for budget reasons is to be debated, but it was no doubt the same physical structure. Then again I don't have HD-tv, so it could actually look different to some of you rich folk out there ;)
3) The painting of the dog. It doesn't look much like Vincent, but I'm sure in their retirement, one of the two picked up a set of white tubes of Dharma Initiative Oil paints and brushes, and went to work.
4) The reason the cabin is technologically void, in lieu of all the available electricity. Rose and Bernard just wanted a quiet, peaceful retirement, with no guns, no craziness, just the jungle, sound of the ocean, and the whispers to keep you company at night.
4) Are the Adam and Eve bodies, with the black and white stones, Rose and Bernard?! *gasp* Probably not, but hmm... right?
Either case, let's not just look at John Locke as the only pawn here. Because the way Mr Black Shirt Locke 2.0 made it sound, his plan was the mother of all plans, like a Ben long con times a million... no make that a billion!
