Ok, first theory... here it goes:
John Locke was resurrected right? Of course not!
In fact, John Locke never died in the episode from the ajira flight and on! In the timeline of events we are presented, Linus indeed kills Locke. But, in the meantime, the losties or anyone present at the 70's timeline, does manage to change the "Whatever Happened Happened" events, in a way that Locke is not murdered by Linus. This change is the incident. This change is why Jack Sayid etc, are sent to the 70's.
Simply because in the 2007 timeline, they are either dead, or were never aboard the flight since the change of the timeline.
Locke is not getting off the plane from the coffin... Locke was on the island waiting. He was on the island from the time when the flash on the plane showed up.
And this change of the past is reflected with the flash, when the O6 suddenly disappear from the plane.
Same thing goes for Christian, and my guess is for Faraday in the coming episodes.
Someone did change the WHH past events in a way they did not die afterall.
So, most of the flashes, have a consequence on the present.
And this is all credited to Faraday from the moment he tells Jack that future can be changed, and that WHH is not so true.
As for the other guys about the "Shadow of the Statue", the past changes do not mean that all events are changed. Some remain as constants. Ben Linus was still the leader of the others, had exiled Widmore and Widmore wanted his revenge.
Well you may argue that past changes, would have an effect on the peoples memories. Consider though, what the writers have so far introduced you with: Your memories come always from your present. The present you have actually lived. Flashes cannot change these memories! Everyone lived their present and this is their knowledge. This is constant. You remember what originally happened to you. Eloise remembers shooting her own son, Sun remembers being on the island, etc.
If Faraday hadn't got a gun on his way to the others, his mother wouldn't have shot him.
And based on the above sentence I believe this is what we are about to see in the season finale.
Changes of the 2007 present, because of actions from the variables (people).
Finally it is correct to say that Whatever Happened Happened, but only in the memories of the variables.
