Whether you've read the Old Testament or just watched Charlton Heston in the Ten Commandments, you probably know the story of Exodus. The people of God are freed from slavery in Egypt after some cataclysmic plagues and are sent wandering in the wilderness. The actually get very near to entering the Promised Land, but due to their fear, are left to wander for 40 years. Only Caleb and Joshua, the two spies who trusted the Lord, are permitted to enter the land (And do so as nearly ageless men who are still strong and vital in their very advanced years.) Even after entering the land, they must fight to claim it. Note: the people of Israel are the children of Jacob.
In the Lostverse, the hostiles seem to be on a very long camping trip--eschewing living in permanent dwellings. Are they waiting until they can enter the promised land? Could the Egptian trapping harken back to their days of captivity? Did they, perhaps, destroy the statue as a way of claiming the land? Is the child-birth problem on the island related to a curse on the first born? Is Jacob directing this bunch much as Israel's Jacob directed his people through his remembered words and example? Is Richard a Moses or Joshua-type figure who leads the people during the exodus and entrance into the land? And what about the Temple? The outer wall, which looks very ancient Egyptian, is admittedly a ruse. Could the inner temple (I'll let you look up the architecture of the Jewish temple on your own.), be similar to the Holy of Holies, which only one man could enter once a year after a sacrifice? That temple was filled with the presence of God on it's consecration day by a cloud. Cl! oud. . . Smokey. . . judgment? Could we be building, ala Battlestar Galactica to a conflict between the mono-theists and the polytheists?
I'll grant that this might be a little out there, but the producers love borrowing from lots of scientific and religious backgrounds, why not from the Judeo-Christian? It would explain the conflict between Dharma and the Hostiles, their uneasy truce, the destruction of the statue and lots more.
