This isn't a totally new theory, but I don't recall anyone pulling it quite together the way I see it...so...
We know blackshirt/esau/samuel and Jacob have been on the island a very long time. By the time the Black Rock comes around in the beginning of S5's finale, the prospect of people coming to the island seems rather old hat. "They come, fight, corrupt" etc.
Both of these guys have seen this before. Blackshirt doesn't care for it, but Jacob persists.
A lot of people have assumed that they are talking about a time loop, the same people coming, nothing ever changing. I think it's always been different people, from the Egyptians, to Black Rock, to 815, to Ajira...that's right, Jacob's been there since the Egyptian empire.
SO...if that is the case...how long HAS Jacob been there? Answer is, of course, since the dawn, and fall, of man.
TPTB usually are pretty picky about the details of the show. This, of course, applies exponentially more to the show's very title.
LOST
Not Marooned, Stranded, Forgotten, Deserted... LOST. In all capital letters. Right in our face the whole time...LOST.
...which is filmed in Hawaii, one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Come on people, the show is based on Paradise Lost. Now, we've all heard the island is Eden theory before, but it seems even more likely now. But this is the story of man's RETURN to Paradise. (Paradise Regained aside)
Jacob and Esau, only a few generations removed from Eden, are trying to return to Eden. Jacob thinks it can be done, ending their story. Esau thinks it's nonsense, but is sworn to serve Jacob, unless he can find a loophole out. Of course, in the bible Jacob and Esau eventually lead armies against each other...
Now Paradise Lost uses the story of the fall to explore the theme off fate/destiny vs. freewill.
Jacob - freewill, (you have a choice) Esau, fate (same old fight, corrupt, over and over).
I've got more on this, but I'd love to see some comments before this becomes a wall of text. But I will point out, this plays into Vozzek's theory about Hurley.
Ilana's crew is interested in "candidates"...
Hurley may just be one. Man was kicked out of Paradise for original sin. Who is more innocent than Hurley? only the children, who were taken from the castaways seasons ago. If Hurley can grow up innocent, can his example be enough to restore man to Eden?
