I haven't seen this theory yet - and I feel like I have read them all, but I do apologize if this is not new.
After re-watching the finale 3 or 4 times, and various episodes from the other seasons from my tivo - I had this idea.
One of the things that has bothered me about the others is the fact that some had british accents and they seem to be quite a diverse bunch.
According to Lostpedia, "The Black Rock was a British ship carrying a crew of 40 plus an unknown number of slaves." Could this account for the accents and diversity?
My theory is simple - Jacob brought the Black Rock to the island much the same as he brought flight 815 - and perhaps these folks all have their issues and backstories, the same as the characters we have been watching over the last 5 seasons.
Richard was most likely among them, possibly a slave, but no doubt a character in need of redemption - his backstory will be interesting to see next season. It is also unclear how much Richard and the others know, and what the deal is with the position of leader.
These people settled on the island and over the years their descendants became the others/hostiles. After 'the incident' the radiation problem on the island started to affect pregnant mothers and they are unable to continue their lineage. This is why Ben and the others wipe out Dharma, take over their stations and eventually call in Juliet to assist with fertility issues.
This makes sense to me - what do you think?
