In The Variable Mrs. Hawking admits to Penny she doesnt know for the first time in a long time what happens from here on in. She also apologises saying its her sons fault Desmond was shot.
We already know that in the past Daniel DOES go back to the island and Eloise always shot him, she was going to mention this to Widmore, i sacrificed my son even though i know... then she went silent. Daniel always went back in time, all the events leading to the island skipping etc ALWAYS HAPPENED.
However the one time where the future was attempted to be changed was when Daniel appeared before desmond and asked him to find his mother. This could be why she feels daniel is responsible to what happened to desmond and why she doesnt know what'll happen to desmond because this isnt how it was meant to be?
It is ODD that if WHH then why would she be sooooo desperate to make sure everyone follows their destined paths, because they would anyways, thats what happened right? Unless things can change? Im thinking things can change, how and where not sure? Cause IF she knows daniel went back and she shot him in 1977, then she'll know no matter what he'll end up on the island and a physicist etc?
Daniels comments about the losties being the variables though however makes sense, the past happened. We've seen NO evidence that the losties were ever around in 1977. Other than the picture taken, which christian showed sun, but is this a result of possible changing future or a man who is dead being an aparition therefore the photo not REAL REAL, more as in a way of showing sun whats happening. ??
THe way i view it atm, is that The time skips always happened, daniel always went back and got shot by his mum. We cant be 100% sure the losties always returned back in 1977 though? sO maybe they are the variable.

Maybe this is why she tried drilling it into him as a young kid, that destiny cant be changed etc, so he would never try and change it ? who knows? No one can seriously be 100% on any theory atm...
