I'm hoping people will help me clarify this, because my memory isn't entirely clear on this. When Locke had Anthony Cooper killed by Sawyer, did he not make it appear to the others that he had killed him himself? And I believe Ben was the one who told him he had to murder his father.
Is there really a connection or something the others "identify" with their leaders having to have killed their father? Perhaps, if they are pervy to future information about who the next leader is, and they know that this leader in the future killed their father, they can identify him in the current time period as quick as possible. I acknowledge the fact that the idea that a person who killed their father is important is mostly speculation.
I have been saying for a while that Locke isn't Locke anymore (yeah, yeah i'm in the minority, i know), and when I think about it, everything that has made Locke leader as of now has been a lie. He didn't kill his father like Ben told him he had to. The only one who has told Richard and the others that Locke is the leader, is Locke. Locke picked the knife as a child, which angered Richard. He dissapeared into the woods when Ben called for Smokie (according to Sun he was doing something), the two were also separated when Ben met smokie in the temple. Oh....and he died.
I know most people are not with me on this 100%, but I think its time more people started to at least take the idea a bit more seriously. I mean, all of a sudden, he wants to kill Jacob, too? What has happened to John since he has been back to the island that we have not seen through the camera lenses?
The name of the last episode "Follow the Leader", was not named just because Locke pronounced himself leader and told people to go with him. I think later on we will see that he wasn't the leader at all, finally revealing the irony of the episodes title.
Oh, and by the way, Ben DID kill HIS father.
And what makes a person a leader more...Proclaiming themselves one, or living to protect everything important, even if it means losing yourself (innocence?), your friends, your family, and on the way, you even have to endure pain from those you are trying to protect (losties beating the shit out of him all the time).
