I was thinking about how the smoke monster took shape of ben's daughter to speak to him, and she gave him an order- do not kill Locke, do as he says. I believe this is because Locke has been a smoke monster ever since his death, same with Christian.
I believe the smoke monster can take the form of anybody who has previously been on the island, and has died. This means that Christian will have to have been alive on the island at some point in his natural, so I think that will also be revealed. This hit me when I thought back to when Ben said "Whatever comes out of the bushes, I cannot control." Locke came out, he is the smoke monster. Notice he had to "leave" to get something to help Ben up as he had his encounter.
Now, why the smoke monster would want to kill Jacob, I have no idea. But I think we are about to find out.
