The Journal, the Compass and Inevitability
So if Hawking talks to Jack and Kate and takes Faraday’s journal, we will have an explanation for why she knew so much and why in 2007 her “knowledge” of the future abruptly ends. Clearly, pushing Faraday to research and her giving Faraday the blank journal in the episode is her fulfilling her role in what will become Faraday’s journey to the island. Just as there are a future group of Losties occupying the same time as there counterparts in the 70s, just as there is a future compass that Alpert gives Locke, that occupies the same time as the compass in the 50s, there is a future version of the journal occupying the same time as the 1990s version of the journal that she gives Faraday. Because of the tragedy of killing her son, witnessing the incident and following closely what happens to the island, Hawking becomes not a person trapped in a time loop, but someone that happens to know many of the events of linear time. Faraday’s journal will give start her on her j! ourney.
I would stop there, but there is more to Hawking that I suspect we will learn. She too was/is able to occupy her past consciousness. She may have acquired this ability by one of two ways. First, she may have participated in the very experiments that Faraday conducted. Faraday no longer remembered it in much the same way he does not remember other events. Alternatively, when the incident occurs, she like Desmond is close to the center of the Swan and is exposed in much the same way. One of these two will explain her future consciousness clearly occupying her past consciousness when she meets and tells Desmond that he will not marry Penny, that he will go to the island and that he will turn the fail-safe key. Her knowing about the death of the man with the red shoes must have been based on that ability. She is no doubt a “Whatever Happened, Happened” (WHH) proponent. So much so that she is willing to let her son. Not as cruel as you think, however, as when she is doing so! , her son is already dead. (The past having already occurred by the time she sends him to his death.)
While there continues a raging debate over WHH and PCC (Past can change), I believe we continue to see more evidence of WHH then PCC. Should we see PCC, it will be isolated and likely as a result of a Hawking or Desmond intervention. But, as Kate said in the Variable once that happens things will be wiped from existence – problem is they won’t know that it has! So if PCC occurs, we won’t know if the change is a PCC or simply another example of WHH. One word for this type of story telling – Brilliant.
