Firstly if you have not read the final two books of Harry Potter, there are spoilers.
Okay I will make this concise.
I'll begin by saying that in my eyes Jacob is one side of a coin, the other side being the black shirted man who we saw talking with him on the beach. This coin would be called good/evil, yin/yang.
Next,
I have a feeling that the creators of Lost may be threading the same path that J.K Rowling did in her final two Harry Potter books. In the Deathly Hollows we see that Voldermort managed to split his essence into several different items/beings, so that if his physical form was destroyed, there would be the possibility of resurrection (a continued existence). It is this act of saving oneself through an existential storage that I think we saw Jacob doing in the finale flashbacks with Kate, Sawyer, Sayid, Jack & Hurley.
We can assume that Jacob realized that his life/existence was under threat from the black shirted man at the beginning of the finale. With this knowledge he moved/escaped from the cabin and settled in a more secure stronghold, the statues foot. I say this because the possessed Locke looks genuinely surprised when Richard tells him that this is where Jacob is.
Alongside this precaution Jacob takes a further step and goes out into the world and finds himself 5 people in whom he can store part of his essence so if he is ever destroyed by his other half then his essence will continue on. Maybe not for the purpose of resurrection but so that those five can stand against the evil that will have killed him. I like to call these five Jacobs children, & they are obviously key to the resolution of the Lost mythology. The never ending game of chess between good and evil.
Please excuse me if this seems rushed, because it is and I am mainly speaking off the top of my head and I would like to get people reactions/ideas/discussion.
