First I want to apologize that part of this comes from an older theory I posted and most likely overlaps with a lot of other theories posted in this section.
However, I want to summarize again what struck me the most in the finale and what I consider to be behind it. The whole persona of Jacob was interpreted brilliantly and the word that summarizes it is probably “divine”. I particularly liked the exhausted, tired, somewhat sad but incredibly tranquil expression on Jacob’s face when the imposter and Ben entered his residence.
It very much appears as if Jacob was getting utterly bored with this challenge and in a sense his upcoming demise did not bother him at all. All he offered was a way out for Ben, who I believe will go crazy once he has realized what he has done.
Jacob believes in mankind and that they one day will be able to live without fighting, hatred and corruption. However until this point is reached man needs higher authorities – gods, destiny, science – he can worship and that he can bow to and dedicate his existence to. Jacob knows that when his rule is over, mankind will be alone – what he needs to succeed is a bunch of humans who are good and noble enough not to succumb to greed and the lust for power once their “guide” is gone.
This is in my opinion blackshirt’s final wish: to see paradise destroyed by the creatures Jacob loved so much. Now it seems very obvious that season 6 will be about “team Jacob” vs “team Blackshirt”. We saw the moments Jacob used to mark each and every one of our heroes as special in flashbacks. “They are coming” is a warning to the imposter that now the final battle has started.
In essence Jacob needs to die for his ultimate goal to happen: the arrival of a new kind of humans capable of leading their lives based on their own judgment in harmony. This is what blackshirt denies. To him it is simply a waste of energy since he does not believe this will ever happen (just like Mephisto in the initial dialogue with God in “Faust”).
Now I don’t know if we have really seen the end of the persona/demi-god Jacob. Given how much the Lost creators worship Star Trek I think it is even possible that we will have 2 Locke’s in season 6 (one inhabited by Jacob, one by blackshirt). However I think there is no need for this. Jacob’s mission is accomplished if the people who he has brought to the island overcome their problems and the challenges presented to them by the island and blackshirt (the smoke monster?).
The whole theme also reminds me of a dialogue in Dostojewski’s “Possessed”. Kiriloff, who denies God, is asked if he believes in eternal life after death. His answer “I believe in eternal life in this existence”. Jacob wants mankind to live life to the fullest - in harmony with each other and with respect for each other and nature (symbolized by the super-natural island).
