I believe after the season 5 finale that the whole show is based around fate v free will. Obviously I am not orignal in this idea but I think that in season 6 we will see the finale battle we have all been waiting for, Jack v Locke.
Throughout the show Jack has always been skeptical of Locke and did not believe in fate/destiny like Locke, he was a man of free will. I believe that the reason that Jack was not meant to return to the island was that it was not his fate, but his choice. Signs of this can be seen in his Tattoo "he walks with us but he is not one of us". This is because I believe that Jack has changed the past. It was his 'choice' to try and change things (he has never felt so right about something before - in bombing the swan station), he did not accept his fate.
I believe that next season will be the final battle between fate and freewill, Locke/black shirt guy/island v Jack/Jacob/Karma
