When Jacob was talking to dark shirt guy (hereafter referenced as "DSG") he said, "It only ends once. Anything that happens before that is just progress."
It seems that he could be searching for a way to test mankind’s progress to find a way to prevent the end of mankind? This is the stated purpose of the Valenzetti Equation. To change some variable in 4,8,15,16,23,42 and "Save the world."
This would explain why Jacob is represented as LIGHT where as DSG is represented as DARK. Jacob is for helping humankind. He believes mankind to possess the ability to progress. This is why he continues to test his theory by repeatedly bringing them to the island to see what they do with their free will. (“they” being mankind at different phases threw ought history. Explaining the Egyptian history on the island. He’s been bringing “them” to the island for a LONG time)
DSG has all but given up and just wants to kill Jacob so mankind can finally just be written off as a failed species. Failed being incapable of progress and thereby having a need for destiny as apposed to free will.
My theory is that Jacob and DSG are either "angels" or "aliens" (Both parenthesized as there can be a broad interpretation of either explanation) and their mission is to watch over mankind to determine whether or not we are a worthwhile endeavor.
It translates well into religion as well. (go easy on me here I am not necessarily "religious" but this is my interpretation.)
Satan believes that people must be controlled and directed with no free will but with destiny. A pre written plan that can be enforced (key word FORCED) As represented here by DSG who wants to kill Jacob to put an end to the search for redemption for mankind and, again; write us of as failed species with no hope of enlightenment and therefore a need for enFOCEment.
Jesus believes that people have the ability to chose the right when given free will. Jesus’ life’s mission was to teach and enlighten us enabling us to do so.
This would make Jacob a representation of a Christian belief that mankind is a species, or a creation if you will, that is in a growing process and can eventually become, once matured, a worthwhile endeavor.
