This entire season has been pushing the Whatever Happened, Happened theory and I agree that in the end this line of thinking will prevail. Why is that?
Daniel said that they are variables and can change the course of things due to that fact. I partially agree with this. Indeed the 815ers futures are changeable because it has not happened yet for them, however the past cannot be changed and has always happened. So how does this lead to the inevitable Incident discussed by Marvin Candle in the Orientation video.
Daniel’s variable theory states that Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid, Jin etc are the variables in this equation. Note VARIABLES, plural. So while Jack acts to detonate Jughead to prevent the pocket of energy being drilled and leading to the Incident that will cause a chain of events downing his plane, one of the other variables will counter his act resulting in the predetermined event.
So who will be acting against Jack? My guess: Locke.
Locke and Jack have been at odds the entire series. Science v Faith, Fate v Freewill, now they seemingly have the same mission, embrace destiny. But what if their destinies are counter productive to one another.
Let us examine this in the form of an equation:
Jack = x Locke=y
1977x = 2007y
In order to keep the equation balanced each side has to do counteract the other!
So essentially Jack’s success with the bomb and Locke’s success with killing Jacob or causing whatever is in the silver case Illana and Bram has to go off will balance the equation and result in the Incident.
So the incident will happen and has always happened and because the variables in the equation led to a net zero situation, the event happened as intended.
I don’t know the specifics and will find out in a few hours (hopefully) but I think this season has been building to one big equation where the variables essentially cause the result.
